All in all, this series is good and I'd probably recommend it to others - but with some conditions. The one thing I've found most irritating about the books so far is the constant repetition. I'm guessing that the author (or editors) were thinking that people would pick this series up in the middle, but the constant re-explaining of the positions of the characters seems to assume that we're either fish or have absolutely no short term memory.Aside from that, it's a bit long and some of the combat scenes are just more of the same that we've seen in the past two books. Overwhelming odds that always get overcome - either by some clever trick or superior tactics. It's certainly helpful to providing the real depth of space that the author's trying to convey, but after awhile it just gets a bit boring.
I started with the firest book Dauntless and read right through all 5. Great story teller with interesting management twist.
Well, I ordered this book on accident. The shades of technological limitations add some great depth to this book. I was attempting to put it on my Wish List and must have hit the "1 click order" button. Best mistake this year though. Many authors simplify their worlds by including instant communication across vast distances of space and magical sensors that are faster then light. Plus, the attachment to the main character
After the disaster that was the previous entry in this series, I'd given up on it. I wasn't until I encountered Valiant at the second hand store and it became one of my buck-a-book purchases did I even consider reading it.Valiant was much better than Courageous in that there wasn't near as much fighting and hen-pecking between the women in Captain Geary's life. I'd still like to see Victoria Rione with her mouth taped shut but at least she wasn't clawing and fighting her way through every scene. Now that there's confirmation the aliens on the other side of Syndic space are real, this series is starting to pick up a little more steam. I don't know that I'd pay full cover price for volumes five and six, but I'll read them eventually.
It's a decent space fighting series. Never get's too heavy and always moves along at a brisk pace. While I enjoy the long epic stories, sometimes it is nice to pick up something a little different. My only problem is that the books were so short, that I caught up to the current published books very quickly.
